. For the next decade and a
half, Cray Research grew and prospered. From a handful of
employees, it bloomed into an international high-tech
company with a staff over 5,000. In 1989, Cray left Cray
Research to form Cray Computer Corporation in Colorado to
build what would still be the fastest supercomputer in the
world and doing it his own way.
In 1984, Chippewa Falls honored Seymour Cray as Citizen of
the Year. He was a great contributor to his community and
his city. During his tenure at Cray Research, the Cray
Research Foundation was established. The Foundation provided
a majority of the funding for the creation of the Cray
Academy. At that time, it was probably not known that the
Cray Academy would expand into a state and national model
for teacher development and involve more than businesses and
industries in the Chippewa Valley. Seymour Cray's love of
mathematics, science and technology is still reflected in
today's well-known Cray Academy.
Chippewa Falls benefited greatly from Seymour Cray's
extraordinary genius. It can be tallied in terms of jobs,
tax base, and ancillary business growth. But even more
important was the spirit of inventiveness and creativity
which Cray infused into the area. Cray, and those who came
to work at his company, brought a sense of mission, purpose,
and accomplishment. Anything became possible for hungry
young minds.
Seymour Cray's persona still casts a long shadow in Chippewa
Falls. It is easy to underestimate the importance of this
quiet, passionate engineer who was never satisfied with the
way things are, who was always looking to expand his
knowledge and push his talents to the limit, who did not
fear taking risks or encountering failure, and who served as
a positive role model and mentor for a new generation of
computer designers and engineers.
Initiated by Cray Research Co. in 1988, the Cray Academy has
grown from serving about 200 teachers in its first year to
over 700 in 1997.
